Sleep is critical to your physical and emotional health. The National Institute on Aging recommends that older adults get between 7-9 hours of sleep each night. 

2. Eat Healthy

Older adults need a balance of the right amount of daily calories and certain vitamins and nutrients. For example, a 65-year-old might need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories daily but should have the right amount of fiber, potassium, calcium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin B12 in their diet. Cutting back on things like red meat, sugar, and fried foods is also a good idea. 

3. Exercise

Physical activity doesn’t need to be strenuous to be beneficial. The recommendation is for 75 minutes of vigorous activity or 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly. This can include walking, swimming, yoga, biking, golf, or something else you enjoy. 

4. Keep Learning

Keeping your mind sharp and engaged is critical as you get older. You can do this by picking up new hobbies and skills. This can be things like gardening, crafts, puzzles, playing cards, or anything else that sparks your interest. 

5. Stay Social

Staying connected with others can help you avoid social isolation and depression. As you pick up some of those new skills or get out and exercise, find some activities where you can connect with others for your mental and emotional well-being.
